Last Sunday Tiger Woods won his 81st PGA event and his 15th Major golf tournament after an incredible final round at Augusta National in the 2019 Masters Tournament. I am a passionate sports fan, and The Masters is my favorite sporting event of the year to watch. Played on perhaps the most beautiful golf course in the world, as well as one of the most challenging, The Masters has a rich history that I appreciate more and more each year.
I admit, I was pulling for Tiger. I know that he has made some life-mistakes, and he would probably like a do-over of 2009, but I believe everyone deserves a second chance. Sports figures all over the globe are calling Tiger’s win at The Masters as the greatest sports comeback in history.
You see, not only did Tiger have to fight his own inner-demons, he also had to overcome what many physicians described as a career ending back injury. I do enjoy golf, even if I am a bit of a hacker, and I have had a back injury… I cannot imagine playing golf with back pain… no thank you! Tiger’s physician described his life as one lived in “constant pain”. It hurt to sit. It hurt to lay down. It hurt to walk. Not only could he not golf… his quality of life was now suffering. Multiple surgeries and rehab stints seemed to make little difference until the last procedure he had about two years ago. Now, the greatest golfer of all time, seems to be returning to his old form. I think it is safe to say he will be favored in the next Major — the PGA Championship.
But while Tiger’s win at Augusta might be considered the greatest sports comeback in history… the greatest ever comeback in history happened that first Easter morning! Jesus… crucified… dead… buried for three days. God’s run on earth was over. Satan cackled in his victory. Despair hung over Jesus’ faithful… and then… the stone was rolled away! The Savior had arisen! Sin and death were crushed! Satan shrieked in his defeat! And Jesus’ followers basked in His Presence! Because of Easter morning, Jesus’ words ring true… “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10. Thank you Jesus! Thank you for your sacrifice! Thank you for your love for us! Thank you for new and eternal life! Thank you for the empty tomb!
