Well, Spring is here and that means one big thing for the McKnight Family Homestead… Spring cleanup. Over the past week I have filled up my side by side dump bed 5 times with broken branches from our yard. Every year I am amazed by how many dead branches fall from our trees. Even though I thoroughly cleaned the property of leaves last fall, leaves have nonetheless found every nook and cranny possible over the winter months. A garden that was well weeded last summer now is a blanket of weeds. I have a couple of dead trees to take down… decks, porches, furniture and patios that need power washed… windows need cleaned, and I still have to get rid of that old Christmas tree. Oh… just typing this list makes me tired. But you know what? Spring cleanup is worth it.
Because of spring cleanup the lawns can be fertilized and mowed… because of spring cleanup flower beds and landscaping areas can be freshly mulched… because of spring cleanup porches, decks and patios can be used and enjoyed… because of spring cleanup flowers and a garden can be planted. While I hate spring cleanup, I do so enjoy what comes after — making things beautiful and useful — after spring cleanup — everything has the potential to look new.
The Book of Revelation informs us of the destruction of the current world and the judgment of sin. Reading the account of the things that are to come is dark and foreboding. One can only read and reflect on the magnitude of the consequences of the curse of sin and the destruction that comes with it with a solemn, heavy heart. All things in Heaven and Earth… and all who have not called on the name of Jesus — will be destroyed.
But thanks be to God that Judgement is not the end of all things, but instead; a new beginning, because right after we read of the destruction we read Revelation 21. “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” Revelation 21:1&5 NIV Hallelujah!
I sure don’t “mourn” over spring cleanup — I might complain about it — but I don’t mourn the results of old, dead and dirty being removed for new, living and clean to replace it. And in the same way, Christians will not mourn over an old world being done away with as the curse of sin is lifted forever — no… we will be too enthralled with our Savior and King who… is… making… everything… new. A New World. A New Universe. A New You!
