Well, this past weekend was the NFL draft. The time of the year where every team in the NFL seeks to improve their roster by adding top players from the college ranks. Many teams think, rightfully so or not, that they are just that ONE player away from making a Super Bowl run. Draft weekend brings hope to even the dregs of the NFL… sure the Chicago Bears finished in last place this past season, but this year they have the NUMBER ONE PICK IN THE DRAFT (which they trade to the Panthers — so what do I know)… but teams think… maybe… just maybe they will draft that key player that will completely turn around their franchise. Draft weekend is a BIG DEAL for an NFL team.
So this week I have been pondering, what are the big deals for our church. While I know we want to say every Sunday is equally important, I think we all understand that some times in the church are just a bit more special than others. Easter and Christmas Eve are two events that are big deals for our church; certainly because of what those days represent, but also because we see so many visitors. For that reason, I give careful attention to presenting the Gospel at both of those services, so that people can hear the Good News of Jesus.
Here’s another one — Vacation Bible School. VBS: Keepers Of The Kingdom this year is June 5-9, 6-8:30 PM. VBS gives our church a unique opportunity to not only minister to families from our church, but also to minister to potentially unchurched families. We will have many children attend who have no church home… and parents will be exposed to our church and the ministries that we offer.
I am praying that we will see families come to know Jesus because of VBS this year. You see, I know that is possible because I have seen families come to know Jesus because of a youth event. A child or teenager who gets excited about Jesus is a powerful influence in a family that is open to spiritual ideas — I have seen it often.
So June 5-9 this year — that’s our Super Bowl. It has perhaps the most potential of any event or activity in our church to see folks give their lives to Jesus Christ. And if VBS is our Super Bowl — then it should mean “all hands on deck!” My prayer has been that our director, Alison, will have to turn away folks from helping because so many want to be part of CAC’s Super Bowl event!
Would you be in prayer for Keepers of the Kingdom? Could you perhaps begin to pray daily for changed lives as a result of VBS? Would you consider serving? You can talk to Alison Winans or you can call the church office. After all, don’t you want to be part of seeing children and perhaps even adults enter the Kingdom of Christ? People drafted into the Kingdom of God… now that is way better than any football draft.
