We sure had some windy days this week. Walking across the church parking lot, I felt like my skin was going to be peeled off by the arctic blast! At least it was blowing me toward the building in the morning, and I didn’t have to walk against it. Anyone who was outside on Tuesday and Wednesday would know instantly that the wind was present! Sure, you can’t see the wind, but you can feel it. You can see the effects of it as the tree branches wave and dead leaves blow past.
Can you imagine someone trying to claim the wind doesn’t exist simply because you cannot see it? “Yeah, I feel something… something is causing the trees to dance and wave… but WIND doesn’t really exist,” they exclaim, “If it did, you would see it!” We would probably rate someone who made such a ludicrous statement on the level of those nuts who believe the earth is flat… looking at you Kyrie Irving.
Yet, I was reminded this week that many people treat belief in God that way. Atheists claim that since God isn’t visible — therefore He must not exist. I once had someone who didn’t believe that God existed tell me, if God appeared to him in his bedroom some night, then he would believe in God.
Sadly, there is SO much evidence of God’s presence in our world and our lives. The effects of God are everywhere. Broken lives restored. Faith in the midst of pain. The design within the whole of Creation. The written accounts of the life of Jesus and all of the eyewitnesses to the Christ Story… Yet folks miss the reality of The Almighty all the time.
The last few days I have tried to make sure that I was looking for the effects of God in the world around me. In the “God Bless You” I received from the cashier at the Dollar Store. In the tears of someone who is trusting God even though life is a challenge. In the hope of a voice offering a prayer for strength. In the smile of someone who lives out the joy of knowing Jesus. To FEEL The Wind. To see the effects of The Wind. And maybe, just maybe… to have the opportunity to convince someone else that, yes… God is here… just open your heart and you will know it!
