Well, if you read my ponderings last week you know that my latest project was a bathroom remodel. I thought I had that project finished last week… but… I developed some water leaks. That’s right… plural… water LEAKS. Can I tell you, of all the home improvement projects that I do, plumbing is by far my least favorite!
I mean, come on… I ran over 100’ feet of gas line from my house to my shop two months ago and installed two heaters without ANY gas leaks… why can’t I put in a simple sink and toilet without leaks? Doesn’t it make sense that GAS would be harder to contain than WATER? Perhaps the fear of blowing myself up provided a bit of subliminal focus?
So, I had water leaking between my toilet tank and bowl and also out of the sink drain —should be a simple enough fix, right? After trying to make the old and somewhat worn out seals work again… I finally broke down and went to the hardware store and bought all new seals. Of course, by now, I had installed that toilet three times and the sink drain four times. The lesson learned… just buy new seals for those types of projects and discard the old ones… after all, those seals cost me a whole 6 bucks. Those old, worn-out seals just couldn’t keep the water from leaking out.
You know, those old seals reminded me of how easy it is for me to let the world leak into my heart. If I am not careful, the influences of culture and the attitudes of the ungodly seep into my soul like that water seeped out of my sink drain tainting my thoughts and mindset and getting my eyes off of the Author and Perfecter of my faith.
So, how do we keep the seals of our heart effective? We seek to daily ingest God’s Word and apply its truths to our life for it is living and active in teaching us God’s will for our lives. We determine to spend time in prayer, not only petitioning God, but also listening to the leading of the Holy Spirit in our life. And we prioritize Christian community with the understanding that a cord of one strand is easily broken, but Christian brothers and sister inspire us to live for Jesus.
How are the seals on your heart? Could they use a bit of refreshing? Lord Jesus, help me reject the ideals of this fallen world and seek you and your kingdom first. Help me love and value your holy word. Teach me to not only lift my requests before you, but to listen for the work you wish to do in my life. And place Christian folks in my life that cheer me on in my pursuit to know you more! Amen.
