Today is Sanctity of Life Day. Sanctity means something that is considered sacred. Have you noticed that society doesn’t seem to hold much as sacred today? At one time family was sacred… church was sacred… the bible was sacred… marriage was sacred… but today for many sacred is considered old fashioned and outdated. Things that once held such high value in the world have become dismissed by the secular as unnecessary and foolishly pious.
I believe it is important for the Church of Jesus Christ to stand for things that God considers sacred… and God considers life to be sacred. At the creation of our world God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness… So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them…” Genesis 1:26a, 27, 28a NIV
Human beings are created in the image of God. We have a soul. A consciousness that is created for the expressed purpose of knowing our Creator and being in relationship with Him. Genesis one is clear… God created people differently than He created other creatures.
God inspired King David to write, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13-16 NIV Jeremiah declares, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born…” Jeremiah 1:4-5 NIV
Jesus once said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10 NIV Jesus came into the world as The Divine One — born in a human body — to live a sinless life, and then die upon a cross as a sacrifice for the very people he had known since they were “knit together” in their mother’s womb. Jesus’ sacrifice makes all human life sacred… because he offered up his holy self for all people.
So, the drug addict’s life… is sacred. The broken and homeless life… is sacred. The criminal’s life… is sacred. The atheist’s life… is sacred. The terminally ill life… is sacred. The self-centered agnostic’s life… is sacred. The unborn life… is sacred.
May we as God’s people not only hold to the sanctity of life… but may we also reflect God’s voice and view that all people matter… because Jesus died for all people… he came to seek and to save the lost.
