That moment when you hear God’s voice. Ever have any of those? Words, impressions, feelings that bounce off your soul unexpectedly. “Lord, was that you?” “Are you speaking to me?” I am reminded of Samuel. “The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10 NIV
A.W Tozer wrote: “Most Christians don’t hear God’s voice because we have already decided we are not going to do what He says.” I know I don’t want that to be true of me, but I will admit, sometimes hearing God’s voice can be a bit uncomfortable to say the very least. There have been times in my life where I probably looked like this little girl when I sensed God’s voice.
I heard God’s voice when He told me it was time to stop ignoring His call on my life to enter ministry. There was the time I heard God’s voice in the middle of the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City where He revealed His broken heart over the lostness of people to me— especially the religious. I
heard His voice when He told me youth ministry was over for me, and He had a different plan in mind. And every time I heard God’s voice, I probably mirrored this little blond girl.
You see, there is this troubling reality that God tends to speak to us when He has something really profound to reveal to us.
I believe I heard God’s voice a little over a week ago at the C&MA General Council in Columbus. It was so unexpected… so quiet… yet so forceful. It happened when a person was on stage leading us in a prayer in her native language… Spanish. “Lord, was that you?” “Are you speaking to me?” “Speak for your servant is listening.” Where do I go from here? Where do we go from here? I don’t know.
David wrote: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…” Psalm 37:7 NIV Oh… so simple to say, yet so hard to do. So, I am seeking to be still before Him… I am seeking to wait patiently for Him to reveal Himself and His will more fully. Sure, it might push me… or us… out of a comfort zone. Yeah, it might require great faith… perhaps even sacrifice. Let us not only be hearers of the Word, but doers. When we hear God’s voice… we surely ought to listen and respond. Don’t you think?
