I participated in Bible Quizzing for one year as a seventh grader. I wasn’t very good at it. Full disclosure here though… I really didn’t study very much. After my seventh grade year my family moved to a new church that didn’t have quizzing, but for that one year before I was part of the church team. And while I didn’t have much success as a quizzer due to lazy preparation, I still have many fond memories of being part of the team.
I enjoyed the friendships. It was exciting to travel to another city. I hadn’t really spent much time away on church related activities before because I was only twelve; and the extended time with friends and the adventure of new places was exhilarating. Once we even stayed overnight!
And while I didn’t enjoy much success as a quizzer and didn’t win any awards, I still remember the first question that I answered to this day. Question: “Who is unstable in all his ways?” Answer: “A double-minded man.” — that’s from James 1. I answered that question… Yikes… 45 years ago.
I don’t know if you had the opportunity to watch our church bible quizzers in action yesterday… but they are amazing! Well… they are just spectacular! They are marvelous beyond expression! Actually, the only way that I can truly think to describe them is that they are supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
I love that we have kids and teens who spend time in God’s Word — most of whom study way more than I ever did. If you see or know one of our quizzers, make sure you give them a high-five. They could be doing a lot of different things on the Saturdays of quiz meets. The time spent in bible study could be spent in the many different pursuits that kids and teens have in their lives… but… they choose to study the Bible. QUIZZERS YOU ROCK AND YOU ARE MY HEROES!
Huge… just a huge shout out to those in our church who serve so faithfully to make our quiz program successful. One whole Saturday given each month… the time spent helping quizzers study and prepare… the encouragement given… and the life lessons you are modeling and teaching. You are making disciples… who will one day make disciples… who will one day make disciples… yeah, you get the idea. You are laying up treasure in Heaven. I love you guys!
So… here’s the challenge church folks… you’re not going to let a 12 year old out-study you, are you? Let’s learn a lesson from our kids… God’s Word is alive and active in our lives… but… only when we spend time within it.
