Lauri and I had a little date night Sunday night. We drove to Sandusky and had dinner at Steak and Shake. Stop it! I can almost hear your thoughts… “Wow, PS… big spender…” I offered to take her to a nicer restaurant… but Lauri wanted a Frisco Melt and fries! We enjoy being together — no matter what we do.
After we finished dinner, I had her close her eyes and type in a couple of random numbers on my phone’s calculator. She typed in the number 13… I know, some people consider that to be an unlucky number but that is just crazy superstition. When she asked why, I told her we were going to Menards and we had to buy something in aisle 13.
We were kind of excited… what were we going to take home that night? What project would I be doing in the coming days? Perhaps a new ceiling light somewhere? How about a new piece of furniture? Maybe a new tool for me!?
So… Aisle 13 at Menards? Bathroom sinks. All bathroom sinks. We already have new bathroom sinks. STINKING NUMBER 13! I know, I know, I SAID we WERE going to buy something in Aisle 13… but we didn’t. Our sense of propriety and desire to not waste any of the resources that God has given us wouldn’t let us do it… we just didn’t NEED a bathroom sink. Maybe I should have gotten one anyway and given it as a door prize at church! LOL… who needs a bathroom sink? But we returned home empty handed.
On the way home I reflected on how God has blessed our family in so many ways. We have more than we truly need. A wonderful home… plenty to eat… we can pay all of our bills and can even afford some extra joys like vacations. God is good.
But the material blessings don’t come close to the spiritual blessings God has given us. Forgiveness, salvation, sanctification, his continuous presence in the Holy Spirit, the promise of Eternal Life and Heaven… God loves to lavish his blessings upon his people.
Many people consider November to be the month of Thanksgiving, and it is a wonderful exercise to reflect in gratitude upon the many blessings God has given us. Paul wrote, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3
Maybe you could carve out a little time this week and make a list… just start writing down blessings in your life. How long of a list could you make in just 15 minutes? Then, perhaps, over the month of November review that list as you prayerfully thank God for everything he has done for you. I am starting my list right now… Number one… Thank you, God, for bathroom sinks…
