On-ramps… gotta love ‘em! At least I do. I like to treat interstate on-ramps like a drag strip… just how quickly CAN I get up to the merging speed of 70 MPH? (And a squawk from my truck tires as I stomp the accelerator is always a bonus) I will admit to being annoyed when a slow poke is on the on-ramp in front of me. “Come on! Let your hair down and set it on fire!” There isn’t a law about how fast I get up to the speed limit. “Let’s live a little!”
I know… I know… some of you are shaking your head about me as you read this pondering… judging me for my adrenaline addiction. PS you are wasting gas and stressing out little old ladies in their Oldsmobuicks who just want to merge safely onto the highway. But you see, I DO love a good adventure and while an on-ramp might be a short one… it nevertheless is a rush!
So, today I am pondering… do YOU need a little adventure? Well, if you do let’s strap you into the passenger seat of my truck and give you one! Just kidding! How about the adventure of serving in the Kingdom of Christ, and making a difference for the King? Are you serving? I know many of you are and I am deeply grateful to each of you. If you’re not, well… maybe you should get out of the Oldsmobuick and jump on an on-ramp.
We have several on-ramps to ministry in our church right now. Maybe one will be right up your alley. VBS is just a couple of weeks away, and I’ll bet we can find a place for you to serve. How about helping to meet a real need in someone’s life by helping them learn English in the ESL ministry? If you have ever been to a country where you do not speak the language you know how isolated it can make you feel.
Maybe you could join the Pro-Life Committee and be part of a team that is helping women choose life for their child. You could help be a champion for those who truly need one. Isaiah wrote: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Isaiah 1:17
Do you have the gift of teaching? We could always use more people to teach an adult class or lead a Bible study. Perhaps you enjoy nurturing and offering spiritual care and support — sounds like you would be a great small group leader.
And… I’m sure you can imagine… we have a significant new hole in the youth ministry. Do you love God? Do you like kids? Then you can be a youth worker!
What I’m trying to say is… get on an on-ramp and floor it! Your next great discipleship adventure might just be at the end of that ramp. Come on… if you are not serving… you are missing quite a rush!
