Last week I cleaned out my shop. Man, did it need it! The last time it was cleaned thoroughly was last fall, and three seasons of winter, spring and summer’s worth of projects had left it deep in sawdust and cluttered. The final straw for me was the spiders. Three days in a row I walked through the door and into a face-level spider web. I hate that!
So, I broke out the shop vac and declared war on those spiders! Sorry if you are an arachnid fan, but I just sucked them up web, egg sacks and all. Every nook and cranny needed the attention of my shop vac. All along the corners of the walls and ceiling… just about everywhere you could imagine. Spider webs everywhere!
Then there was the sawdust — sawdust on the floor… sawdust on the workbenches and shelves… sawdust on the lights… you get the picture — sawdust everywhere! I vacuumed the floor and mopped it three times to get it clean. Today, it looks pretty good — for a workshop.
Actually, just tonight I was loathe to use my table saw lest I make the floor dirty again, which kind of negates the idea of having a workshop, doesn’t it? It was hard work, and took me a few hours to do, but oh was it worth it! The difference is quite amazing, and I enjoy being out there so much more.
You know, that dirty workshop reminded me of what life is like without the saving power of Jesus in our lives. Sin is such a powerful influence that it dooms us to eternal separation from a holy God. Isaiah wrote, “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.” Isaiah 64:6 NLT Yep, sin makes everything filthy.
But thanks be to God that Jesus can take what is filthy and wash it clean and white as snow! No life is too sinful… no heart too far gone… no sin too powerful for the shed blood of Jesus our Lord! Paul assures us of Jesus’ work when he taught, “He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.” Ephesians 1:7 NLT
You know, I love a clean workshop, but I will be forever grateful for a clean heart. Look at this wonderful truth… And since we have a great High Priest (JESUS) who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Hebrews 10:21-23 NLT
Clean and washed from sin — Thank you, Lord Jesus!
