Something absolutely astounding happened to me this past week. Over the last few months my shop had gotten to be quite cluttered, and so I was finally doing some necessary cleaning. Putting away tools, vacuuming cobwebs and bringing a bit of order to chaos so to speak.
I was carrying a tray loaded with screws on it when I unexpectedly tripped — spilling hundreds of screws all over the floor. I was in mid-sentence, grumping out-loud about the mess I would have to clean up — when what to my wondering eyes should appear? Those screws had fallen in a perfect shape of a 2 dimensional earth! And not just the round shape of the earth… no… I’m talking perfectly outlined continents that even had little screw divisions marking each country! Yep… there was Brazil right there in South America! Fuji, in the perfect location from Australia. The seven islands of Hawaii… right were they should be!
I narrowed my eyes in disbelief. Surely I was imagining things… perhaps I was asleep and dreaming… maybe there were paint fumes that I was unaware of in the room. But, no, there it was… a perfect representation of the earth as if it had been placed there by a skilled cartographer. I told you… absolutely astounding!
Alright, I know what you are thinking… you’re not buying it are you? No way that happened; I can just hear you thinking! You sense a set up, don’t you? Or perhaps an outright lie! And… you would be absolutely… correct. Why? Because countless experiences in your life tell you that order does not come from chaos. If there really was a perfect representation of the earth complete with continents and countries outlined from my screws… someone HAD to design it. In apologetics this is called the Teleological Argument. Order always has a designer.
Yet, a large portion of the scientific community has been trying to set us up with the very same principle that order can come from chaos when it comes to the design of the universe and the complexity of life for decades. Richard Dawkins, a well known atheist, actually tries to make the argument that things like the universe and life have “the appearance of being designed, but in reality are not designed.” Yeah, read that again.
I think I remember a famous philosophical think tank making a similarly ludicrous presupposition when they said… “What floats in water? Wood! What else floats in water? A duck! Exactly, so logically if she weighed the same as a duck she’s made of wood… and therefore… a witch!” Ah, the wisdom of Monty Python — and if you don’t know the movie, don’t worry about… It reads stupid even without seeing the movie, right? Just like the atheistic evolutionist.
You have a Designer. Our World has a Designer. The Universe has a Designer. God Almighty!
God’s Word says, “He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing. He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight. He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it. He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.” Job 26:7-10
I am always amazed by this passage that was written before anyone could ever have empirical evidence of the Earth being suspended in space. But God knew… because God created it. So don’t ever be intimidated by people who deny the existence of the Creator God. The evidence is overwhelming. Unless you can bring some sort of sense to wood, ducks and witches having some sort of weird commonality, that is.
